Bintulu, 27 December 2006: The rural-urban migration has resulted in the population of Bintulu to swell from 24,000 people in 1980s to over 103,000 in 2000. "This (rural urban) shift is not only happening in Bintulu but throughout Sarawak," said BDA's General Manager, Mohidin Ishak, when addressing at a two days seminar on Bandar Sejahtera Bintulu at BDA Auditorium.

Bintulu Member of Parliament, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, who was represented by the president of the Federal of Registered Chinese Association here, Pau Chiong ung, officiated at the opening. Mohidin said that based on the population growth from 1980 to 2000, Bintulu had a growth rate of 5 percent within 20 years, as against the State's average of only 2 per cent.

On the part of BDA, Mohidin said we are playing our role to ensure that the people lived in a healthy environment. "We want to make Bintulu As a preferred place to live, work and retire in" said Mohidin, BDA's General Manager.

Tiong meanwhile said that ever since the establishment of BDA in 1978, Bintulu had witnessed tremendous changes, with well planned infrastructure and its industrial complexes built in the outskirts-away from the town centre.
