Bintulu,
located in central Sarawak, is a coastal town and the administrative centre
of Bintulu Division. It is about 650 kilometers from the state capital,
Kuching and about 215 km. from either Sibu or Miri, the other two developed
towns in Sarawak. The Bintulu Division has been declared a designated
area of the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) covering an area of 12,515
sq. km., including 5 km. offshore.
About two decades ago Bintulu was just a humble and small fishing village. However, since the formation of Bintulu Development Authority in July 1978, it has turned Bintulu into one of the premier, well planned, fast developing industrial and commercial towns with attractive landscaping and lush greenery. Bintulu has a population of about 170,000 comprising Ibans, Chinese, Malays, Melanaus and other races as well as foreign workers, with diverse cultural and religious backgrounds. Despite being a booming industrial centre with the implementation of mammoth and multibillion ringgit industrial projects, the natural and luxuriant tropical rainforest is well conserved and preserved. Being geographically situated half-way between Kuching and Kota Kinabalu - both accessible by international air link, Bintulu is a central gateway to tourist spots like the Niah Cave, Mulu National Park, Loagan Bunut and Lambir National Park. Also, Bintulu is connected by roads to all major towns and most places of interest in Sarawak. |
