BINTULU: The High Performance Team (HPT) on Road Safety Campaign was launched at Bintulu Golf Club yesterday.

At the same time, a road safety campaign along Tg Kidurong road was also held in conjunction with the upcoming Christmas celebration. Present at the event was Bintulu Resident Muhamad Yakup Kari who is chairman of Bintulu Road Safety Council (MKJR).

The programme was organised by MKJR Sarawak in collaboration with Sarawak Road Safety Department (JKJR), Bintulu Resident’s Office and District Office, Police, Road Transport Department, Bintulu Development Authority, Bintulu Information Office, Shell MDS, Lions Club Bintulu, People’s Volunteer Corps, Bintulu Golf Club and other agencies.

MKJR in a statement said the programme aimed at increasing road safety awareness through advocacy with road users, particularly motorcyclists.

The HPT on Road Safety campaign is an initiative introduced in 2015 that focused on four selected roads in Sarawak; namely Miri-Airport Road, Bintulu-Kidurong Road, Matang Road in Kuching and Bakun Road.

The roads were selected based on the higher rate of road accidents, high utilisation rate and high maintenance cost, especially for Bakun Road. During the programme, a road safety awareness talk was presented by Rano Akat from Road Transport Operations and Governance, Shell Malaysia Exploration. MKJR also advised road users to plan every journey and conduct pre-drive safety check to ensure their vehicles are in good condition.

Most importantly, the drivers must be in good health and abide by the traffic laws while on the road, he said.

The road users were also urged to be more alert to factors contributing to accidents. Apart from the road safety talk, activities like helmet exchange programme, installing visibility enhancement sticker at the back of a motorcycle and distribution of pamphlets and car stickers were held.
