BINTULU: A total of 5,650 arch kites took to the sky on the final day of the 11th Borneo International Kite Festival 2015 at Bintulu Old Airport site yesterday.

This spectacular feat created history when it flew into the Malaysian Book of Records (MBR). It took about 15 minutes for the arch kites to dot the sky before the attempt was endorsed as a record for the longest arch kite tunnel in MBR.

The record, flying the arch kites in a shape of a tunnel, was a big achievement by the organiser (Bintulu Development Authority (BDA)), said Assistant Minister of Public Utilities (Electricity and Telecommunications) Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi Utom.

“This MBR record will indirectly take this kite flying festival to a new level.”

Dr Rundi believed arch-kite flying was among the best events to promote this sport internationally.

It could be turned into a colourful kite flying festival, with all sorts of shape of kites from all over the world.

He hoped BDA would attempt to continue breaking records in future festivals.

“From this programme, it is hoped that Bintulu will not only be known as an industrial town. It should also be

known for its capabilities in organising international-level events.”

Also present to witness the record breaking feat were Bintulu Deputy Resident (Social) Richard Michael Abunawas, BDA secretary Siti Aishah Othman, and MBR director Christopher Wong.
