BINTULU: The time has come for the local people to be the eyes and ears of the local authority by reporting any act of vandalism being committed on public amenities.

Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) general manager Rodziah Morshidi is very firm on vandalism issue which poses a major threat towards Bintulu’s vision to become a Friendly Industrial City by 2020.

She said stricter laws would be enforced against the offenders and to ensure effective enforcement. Public cooperation was also needed particularly in providing evidence.

“It is about time the local community worked closely with BDA and play their respective roles to protect Bintulu and rid the streets of these undesirable humans,” Rodziah said.

She was referring to the various vandalism acts being committed on public facilities, illegal (rubbish) dumping and even planted flowers to beautify the town were stolen in broad daylight.

She said BDA was moving closer to the community by utilising whatever medium to get feedbacks from the ground in order to improve BDA’s service delivery.

For this, the public she said could provide photos or any related information to BDA via Whatsapp application.

“I want to appeal to the public to cooperate with us because these cases are quite rampant of late and BDA cannot be on the watch-out alone all the time,” she told a press conference at Wisma Bintulu yesterday.

The photos and other evidence could be forwarded directly to her at 019-8158166.

Rodziah added the public could also send the photos and information to BDA Environment Services assistant general manager Wan Ibrahim Wan Ali (019-8850158) or Bintulu Municipal Service (Perbinda) senior manager Abdul Wahab Hashim Bujang (019-855838) so that further action could be taken against the offenders.

“We need the assistance from everyone on this matter even for other offences outside our jurisdiction, you also can share them with us and we will contact the relevant authority to address the issues accordingly,” she said.

Meanwhile, Wan Ibrahim said recently a lorry was impounded by BDA after being caught carrying out illegal dumping of rubbish and the offender had to pay a heavy fine to claim the vehicle.

Complaints and feedback can also be submitted to BDA SMS hotline number at 013-8362277 which operates 24 hours.
