BDA acts tough on litterbugs

BINTULU: Starting this month, Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) enforcement officers will issue compounds to those caught littering on the spot in line with its anti-litterbugs campaign 2018.

As a start, a RM15 compound would be issued to the litterbugs.

BDA general manager Rodziah Morshidi said this was the last option that had to be taken to create awareness of keeping the town clean and to encourage proper garbage disposal.

She told The Borneo Post recently that it is an ongoing effort that should involve the entire community and not just BDA alone as protecting and preserving the environment is everyone’s responsibility.

During the campaign, BDA enforcers will patrol several locations and also crowded areas which had been identified and issue compounds to offenders under the Local Authorities (Cleanliness) By-Laws 1999.

She said BDA was also looking seriously into other offences such as illegal dumping which was still rampant in Bintulu, for which offenders would be issued a RM1,000 compound or charged in court.

“BDA has been spending huge amount of money for the unnecessary cleaning works every day. If the money is not used for this unnecessary cleaning, for sure we can carry out other activities such as social interaction with the communities, including helping the needy,” she said.

Rodziah also said her enforcement teams had recently conducted spot-checks at the night market.

“Our enforcement personnel give warnings and reminders to traders and the public to always keep the place clean and tough action will be taken against them if they fail to comply,” she said.

According to her, the gentle reminders received good response as the traders started to collect rubbish within their stalls and disposed them in the dustbins.

“Let us work together and give your full cooperation to ensure the success of this campaign,” said Rodziah, adding that anyone in the community can make a difference by disposing of waste in the proper receptacles.

Last Saturday morning, she led hundreds of volunteers for the Bintulu Anti-Litter Walk 2018 programme from Taman Tumbina to Bintulu Sentral to promote cleanliness. She said many more such campaigns would be held soon. For any enquiries, call Bintulu Municipal Services (Perbinda) at 086-332662 or SMS to 013-8362277.
