BINTULU: A master study on the irrigation and drainage system in Bintulu is being conducted in order to prevent flash floods.

Bintulu Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said the study included looking at both short term and long term measures to improve the drains in housing areas that often cause flash floods.

He said the study was being conducted by a private consultant, Jurutera Jasa (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd, and was expected to be completed by end of this year and the finding would serve as a benchmark for future development projects in Bintulu.

“I also want Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) to continue monitoring the housing projects by developers especially on the drainage system in order to comply with the standard to prevent the occurrence of flash floods,” said Tiong in a press conference after attending a briefing on the master plan study by the consulting engineer, Tai Lee Yoon, at Wisma Bintulu on Monday afternoon.

Bintulu Resident Muhamad Yakup Kari was present.

He cautioned developers not be too selfish and only think about profits because they should consider the needs of the residents and if possible to achieve a win-win situation.

On the drainage issue in Jade Garden, he said BDA had issued a tender for upgrading the drainage system in the housing area and hoped that the contract can be awarded by March this year, the latest.
