BINTULU: Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) will continue to improve and upgrade public facilities in Bintulu, especially those related to schools and the safety of students.

Its general manager Rodziah Morshidi said while BDA is playing its part as a local authority, the public should also contribute towards the cleanliness of the town.

Instead of spending money on sweeping the streets, which according to her is unnecessary, BDA should use its funds for other meaningful purposes.

But BDA certainly cannot do everything alone without the support of the local community, she added.

“The way forward is through public engagement,” she said at the official opening of the zebra crossing at SMK Kidurong here yesterday.

She added while Bintulu is experiencing vast development, the right public engagement is vital to make the town a better place for everyone.

“We will support and try our best to improve public facilities in town, especially the safety of students in schools,” said Rodziah.

She also shared some issues faced by BDA which she said could be solved with the support of the public.

Naming one of the issues as littering, Rodziah, however, was glad that they were slowly getting the support from the public who posted pictures of individuals caught in the act.

She believes that social media is one of the most powerful tools that should be fully utilised for a good cause.

At the same time, she was annoyed with some irresponsible persons who threw their rubbish indiscriminately, causing BDA to spend thousands of ringgit to clean up the mess.

On vandalism, she said the public can forward their complaints with pictures to her at 019-8158166.

Meanwhile, on road safety especially in school zones, she said BDA had set up a zebra crossing in front of SMK Kidurong and also road safety signs.

“Road safety is a big issue in Malaysia and as young people you still have a lot of good years. You are the generation we should look at – groom the younger generation for the future,” she said.

Also present at the programme were school principal Rosli Salleh, other senior teachers and a representative from Bintulu Education Office.

The zebra crossing is a project under the #ShellSelamatSampai’ programme.
