BINTULU: Protecting and preserving the environment is a collective responsibility as even in a small way it brings huge impact to the earth and the people’s wellbeing, said Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) assistant general manager Sheikh Anuar Nasruddin Aminullah.

“Protection of the environment is everybody’s responsibility, the schools can contribute too,” he said when officiating at the launch of ‘Eco Community’ project at Tanjong Batu Beach yesterday.

Anuar noted that this was the first time that BDA had received donations from a school to beautify the landscape of its public parks, and extended his appreciation to SMK Kidurong for taking the challenge.

He said BDA’s vision is to make Bintulu a ‘Friendly Industrial City’ – a liveable and sustainable city for everyone.

But the vision cannot be achieved if the community fails to observe and cooperate with the local authority in efforts to protect and preserve the environment, he pointed out.

“We build public parks for the people to enjoy their leisure time with friends and families but we are a bit disappointed because of vandalism.

“There are illegal dumping activities in some areas, river pollution and these are the factors that put us down,” said Anuar.

He said BDA will do its part as a local authority by working closely with the Department of Environment but it is impossible to protect the environment without the support of the relevant parties.   Thus, he said, public cooperation is crucial as it involves the spirit of voluntarism and environmental consciousness.

“We try our best to preserve it as much as possible but with vandalism, it is a great challenge, we can’t do it alone, we need all parties’ involvement. We must keep the environment clean and healthy for the next generation,” he added.

Meanwhile, SMK Kidurong principal Rosli Salleh said educating and promoting environmental awareness must start at the early age.

He revealed that the Kidurong Egret Eco Squad (KEES) of SMK Kidurong had been selected to represent the state at the Eco Community Toyota Eco Youth 2016.

Fourteen schools from throughout Malaysia will be competing at the national-level competition, organised by UMW Toyota Motor in collaboration with the Education Department.

The school yesterday also inked a Memorandum of Understanding with BDA, which allocated the Parking 3 at Tg Batu Beach to the school for its Eco Community project.

According to Rosli, representatives of the organising committee will be visiting the eco project site on August 25 and eight members of the squad will be sent to Kuala Lumpur in October for the exhibition and presentation of their project.

He wished KEES group all the best and hoped it could instil the spirit of voluntarism among s students of SMK Kidurong and other schools.

For the challenge, they have to meet eight Toyota problem solving methodologies; namely identify and select problem, understand current situation, set target, analyse the root cause, draft counter measures, check result and standardise and establish.
