Electricity & Power Supply

In Bintulu, electricity is supplied by the Sarawak Electricity Supply Corporation (SESCO) At present the electricity supply in Bintulu is generated by gas turbines which have the capacity to generate 132 megawatts (MW) per day.

For major industrial consumers, individual generation of electricity is permitted by the government. For example, the MLNG Plant utilises their own power plant which has a generated capacity (Steam & Gas Turbine) of 102 MW. The urea/ammonia plant also gets its electricity supply from its two steam turbines, each with a capacity of eight MW.

In Bintulu, power is distributed over 33 KV or 11KV system. For ordinary consumers, the voltage supplied is 230 volt single phase or 415 volts three phase. For large consumers, the voltage supplied is at 33 KV or 11 KV depending on requirement. The frequency of supply is 50 cycles per second.
The power station at Tanjung Kidurong is connected to the sub-station in Bintulu town via 33KV transmission.

LOWER POWER FACTOR CLAUSE

If the average power factor in any month is found to be below 0.85 lagging, supplementary charges of 1.5% of bill for that month for each hundredth part (0.01) below 0.85 lagging power factor shall be added to the bill for that month

BAKUN HYDRO ELECTRICITY POWER PROJECT

For the time being, natural gas in used to run turbines to produce electricity. Sarawak has hydro-power generating potential at 51 sites with a total combined capacity of 20,000 megawatts (mw). Four sites located in the upper Rajang River Basin are capable of generating a total of 4,600 mw which is more than the installed capacity of the whole Malaysia. The Bakun Hydroelectric power project, which is due for commission in the year 2010. When completed and fully implemented by the year 2010, will generate 2400 megawatts of electricity. This will add to the supply of electricty in the region. For more information, contact the Regional Manager of Sarawak Electricity Supply Corporation (SESCO).

WATER SUPPLY

The Bintulu Water Supply Treatment Plant has a designed capacity of 77 million litres per day. The current average daily consumption in Bintulu is 63 million litres. Water from the plant is chanelled through a 800mm main to Tanjung Kidurong and a 600mm main to Kemena Industrial Estate and Bintulu Town Area.

The treatment plant capacity has been extended to 177 million litres per day in 2002. In order to augment the raw water source, a new raw water reservoir with storage capacity of 30 million cubic metres has been constructed and completed.

The needs of the industries and the expanding populations for water in can be easily meet.
