BINTULU: Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) is in the process of upgrading the facilities at the main site of Borneo International Kite Festival (BIKF).

Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Integrity and Ombudsman) Datuk Talib Zulpilip said the project is being carried out by the National Landscape Department and BDA.

He said the landscaping project costs RM8.19 million and is expected to be completed by December this year.

“This upgrading project is to further improve the facilities and to beautify the BIKF site which is in line with the international status of the festival,” he told a media conference yesterday.

Once completed, Talib said this project will become another new landmark for Bintulu division as the site will become a popular recreational spot for locals and international visitors.

In addition, he said next to the BIKF site along the Boulevard Road, BDA will build a ‘Boulevard Walk’ at an estimated cost of RM3.35 million.

He said the 1.2km-long and 31m-wide Boulevard Walk will accommodate 33 kiosks and benefit local traders.

“BDA will proceed with some of the projects that would benefit local traders, and we are looking forward to a better BIKF in the future,” he said.

On an unrelated matter, Talib said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg had announced several development projects during his working visit to Bintulu recently.

He said some of the projects have been implemented such as the construction of low-cost housing.

“Affordable housing project will be continued and BDA is working hard to ensure the project can be implemented.

“Bintulu is developing rapidly, people are coming, with the high demand for houses the price will go up,” he said. The government, he added, was aware of this issue and had been implementing various housing projects in the past which would be continued for the wellbeing of the people.
