BINTULU: Thirty-four stray dogs have been caught from several locations here from Oct 19 to 23 following the spread of rabies to the division.

According to Bintulu Development Authority’s (BDA) Public Utilities and Rural Cleanliness Unit, the operations were conducted to control the population of stray dogs so as to contain the spread of the rabies virus. Two localities here have been declared as the latest rabies-infected areas in Sarawak.

The BDA Public Utilities and Rural Cleanliness Unit said 500 pamphlets and notices on the mass vaccination programme on Oct 20 and 21 were distributed to the public. This included 100 notices distributed to the Sg Selad, Sg Setiam and Sg Seterus settlements.

Statistics from Bintulu Veterinary Services Department said a total of 2,597 dogs had been vaccinated with anti-rabies vaccine in Bintulu Division from Oct 11 to 21, while 1,473 pet owners had turned up to get their pets vaccinated during the period.

For the vaccination exercise on Oct 20, a total of 616 dogs were vaccinated, and 834 dogs on Oct 21. Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah in a statement on Oct 18 issued by State Disaster Management Committee said Taman Bandar Jaya, Jalan Tun Hussein Onn and SK Sg Selad, KM 35Bintulu- Kuala Tatau coastal road as the 45th and 46th areas in Sarawak declared as rabies-infected.

He reminded pet owners that it is an offence to let their dogs roam free in a rabies infected area, or to move them out from a rabies infected area without written consent from the state veterinary authority.
