A Rokaku kite-flying demonstration marks the start of the Bintulu International Kite Festival 2025.
BINTULU (Sept 17): The skies above Bintulu erupted in a vibrant kaleidoscope of colours today, marking the spectacular launch of the Bintulu International Kite Festival (BIKF) 2025 at the iconic Bintulu Old Airport grounds.
Officiating the opening ceremony, Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang expressed immense pride as he welcomed international visitors and participants to the town.
“Today, I stand before you with great pride and joy as we gather to celebrate one of Bintulu’s most iconic and colourful events,” said Pang, noting that the festival has grown from modest community gathering into a globally recognised spectacle that puts Bintulu on the world tourism map.
This year’s edition has drawn 160 kite flyers from 29 countries, including first-time participants from Haiti, Macau (China), and Tamil Nadu (India).
Pang emphasised that the festival’s significance extends far beyond the visual spectacle.
“BIKF is more than just beauty in the skies; it is a driver of tourism, a booster for our economy, and a vital platform for cultural exchange,” he said.
“It brings thousands of visitors to Bintulu, uplifts our small businesses, and showcases the unique warmth and hospitality our town is known for.”
He also paid tribute to the unwavering support of the Sarawak government under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, highlighting that the festival’s success aligns with the state’s Post-Covid 19 Development Strategy to become a vibrant tourism hub.
Pang acknowledged the dedication of countless volunteers, kite enthusiasts, community groups, and the Vendor & Traders Management Committee for their role in the festival’s continued success.
“BIKF is living proof of what we can achieve together. This festival is not the work of one agency alone, but the combined strength of government agencies, strategic partners, NGOs, and the entire Bintulu community.”
With thousands expected to attend in the coming days, BIKF 2025 is poised to reinforce its status as one of Sarawak’s most colourful and unifying events.
Present were Bintulu Development Authority deputy general manager Abdul Rahim Abdullah, Deputy Bintulu Resident Abang Zainuddin Abang Turkey, Bintulu Port Authority general manager Captain Zakhir Khan Yusop, BIKF Hawkers Booth Management Committee chairman Pandi Suhaili, and BIKF field technical chief Azman Drahman.
