Participants parade through the streets of Bintulu in vibrant traditional attire while carrying colourful pinwheels.

BINTULU (July 23): More than 600 participants from government agencies, private organisations and community groups brought colour, energy and festive spirit to the streets of Bintulu during the Borneo International Kite Festival (BIKF) 2026 Parade.

The lively parade preceded the official opening ceremony of the five-day 19th BIKF at the Old Bintulu Airport site.

In a welcoming address delivered on behalf of Bintulu Resident and BIKF 2026 co-chairman Datu Nyurak Keti, Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) Corporate Services assistant general manager Mohamed Ansari Mohamad Syed Ahmad said the enthusiastic participation demonstrated the community’s unwavering support for one of Sarawak’s premier tourism events.

“The parade truly reflected the spirit of togetherness, unity and the people’s love for this festival,” he said.

Nyurak said this year’s BIKF has attracted 154 kite flyers from 19 countries, alongside participants from 10 Malaysian states.

He said the strong international turnout was particularly significant amid global economic challenges, rising airfares and travel disruptions, which had not deterred participants and organisers from ensuring the festival’s continued success.

Welcoming both first-time visitors and returning participants, he said their presence not only filled Bintulu’s skies with spectacular kite displays but also strengthened international friendship through the shared passion for kite flying.

Running from July 22 to 26, the festival features giant kite displays, night LED kite performances, cultural activities and a Trade Expo involving 160 local entrepreneurs, creating opportunities for tourism and local businesses.

Nyurak said BIKF has grown beyond a recreational event into an important economic catalyst for Bintulu by attracting visitors and providing greater exposure for local entrepreneurs.

He also expressed appreciation to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for his continued support in ensuring the internationally recognised festival continues to flourish.

He thanked BDA, government and private agencies, sponsors, the BIKF 2026 Booth Management Committee, the Brotherhood Kite Club’s field technical team, volunteers and all personnel involved in ensuring the smooth running of the festival.

Special recognition was also given to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela), Auxiliary Police and BDA Enforcement personnel for maintaining safety and public order throughout the event.

Nyurak expressed confidence that BIKF would continue strengthening Bintulu’s reputation as a unique tourism destination offering memorable cultural and community experiences.

He also encouraged the public to visit the festival grounds, support local traders and enjoy the colourful celebrations throughout the five-day event.
