BINTULU (Aug 2): Bintulu is no longer merely preparing to become a global sporting destination but is already making its mark on the international stage, according to Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang Leong Ming.

He said this was evident from the participation of 10,472 runners from 23 countries in the Bintulu Marathon 2026 on Sunday.

“The world is no longer asking, Where is Bintulu? The world is coming to Bintulu,” he said when officiating at the prize-giving ceremony.

The marathon’s internationally certified routes, which meet global standards, further demonstrated Bintulu’s growing credentials as a host for international sporting events, he added.
The Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) and strategic partners were commended for organising the event.

Pang also highlighted other social and economic positives stemming from the event such as benefits for hotels, small businesses, food vendors and local entrepreneurs.

“Sports is not just about medals, it is about momentum. And today, Bintulu has momentum. When Bintulu wins, the people must win too,” he said.

The success of this year’s marathon should serve as a springboard for Bintulu to move stronger, faster and further in hosting major international events, he urged.
